Episode 1
EPISODE 1 SCRIPT:
PANEL 1:
Devon’s room, clothes are scattered on the floor and posters from video games are arranged haphazardly on the wall, overlapping and crooked. Devon is playing video games on his bed and talking over a headset.
DEVON
Seriously?!?!
PANEL 2:
Over the shoulder shot of Devon playing the game, the TV has a gameplay similar to dark souls games.
DEVON
Dude. You can’t ditch on me, we were gonna be roommates!
FRIEND
(over the headset)
Man, I’m sorry, but I told you if I got into my first choice I’d have to go for that first.
PANEL 3:
Devon looks annoyed.
DEVON
Ugh. You’re lame. I mean I’m happy for you, but how am I gonna find a roommate now?
PANEL 4:
Close up of Devon’s hands as he plays the game, action lines trail his finger movements.
FRIEND
(over the headset)
Post on PlaceLook? Everyone is looking there for a roommate.
PANEL 5:
Devon puts down the controller and picks up his phone with the other hand.
DEVON
Alright fine. Go beat the boss, I’m gonna make a post.
FRIEND
(over the phone)
No way, I’m waiting. I’m not dealing with that BS without you.
PANEL 6:
Cut to Hani’s room. Hani is looking through their computer on their bed, kpop posters cover their walls in an orderly and optimized fashion, and the room is clean and pastel themed. The bed has stuffed animals on it.
PANEL 7:
Hani looks surprised and excited, still looking at the computer while they call out to their sister.
HANI
I found a roommate!
PANEL 8:
Hani’s sister rushes in through the door, also looking surprised and excited.
SISTER
Finally!
PANEL 9:
Hani’s sister sits down on the bed and Hani holds out their hands.
HANI
Victory handshake!
PANEL 10:
After-image of double hand high five, as their hands cross over their chest.
HANI
Who are the cool cats?
PANEL 11:
After-image of their hands sliding together, as they clap.
SISTER
We are the cool cats.
PANEL 12:
Double finger guns.
BOTH
Icy, meeeeow!
PANEL 13:
They both laugh together, almost falling off the bed.
PANEL 14:
Hani turns the computer and on the screen is Devon’s profile. Devon’s picture is his dog and barely himself in the picture behind the dog, holding it up. His bowl cut is longer and he has glasses on. It’s an old picture.
HANI
Look who it is!/ I can’t believe we’re going to the same college.
SISTER
He looks kinda familiar.
PANEL 15:
Hani looks at their sister in disbelief, their sister looks shameful.
HANI
You seriously don’t remember Devon? I was, like, best friends with him in middle school before we moved!
SISTER
I was a tiny baby back then, how am I supposed to remember!
PANEL 16:
The two look towards the doorway towards the voice, both caught off guard slightly.
MOM (OP)
You were very close with Devon. But be careful.
PANEL 17:
Mom is revealed standing in the doorway, looking a little stern.
PANEL 18:
Hani smiles, their sister looks worried as all hell.
HANI
He was a nice guy, I’m sure he’ll still be fine.
PANEL 19:
Their mother walks in and confronts Hani with folded arms.
MOM
Being a nice friend doesn’t mean he’ll be a good roommate. / Sometimes friends become roommates and their friendships end very quickly.
PANEL 20:
Hani smiles back and shrugs.
HANI
I’ll make sure we have a chore schedule, it’s no big deal.
PANEL 21:
Hani does a heart hand and smiles even bigger.
HANI
I’m sure it’ll be just like old times. BFFs!
PANEL 22:
Devon is already mostly moved in, hanging out and reading manga in the living room on the couch.
PANEL 23:
An exacerbated voice from outside the door asks Devon to let them in. Devon perks up.
HANI
(through door)
I could use some help with the door if you’re home!
PANEL 24:
Devon opens the door and looks confused.
PANEL 25:
A pile of boxes talks to Devon (aka Hani holding too many boxes.)
HANI
Hi, thank you. Now please move out of the doorway, cause I’m about to drop everything.
PANEL 26:
Devon takes some of the boxes.
DEVON
No way, dude. Let me grab a couple of those for you.
GENRE BEAT (LOVE AT FIRST SIGHT):
PANEL 27:
Devon’s eyes light up as they see Hani.
PANEL 28:
Flashback to young Hani standing there with the boxes in place of current Hani.
PANEL 29:
Flashforward to present day Hani, sparkling effects and rose tint.
PANEL 30:
Hani stares back, also with lively eyes.
PANEL 31:
Flashback to young Devon standing there with the boxes in place of current Devon.
PANEL 32:
Flashforward to present day Devon, sparkling effects and rose tint.
PANEL 33:
Dutch angle. Hani and Devon looking at each other, the background is faded and romance effects (sparkles, lens flares, etc.) are all over the panel.
END OF GENRE BEAT:
PANEL 34:
Hani clears their throat and Devon snaps out of it.
SFX:
AHEM
DEVON
Let’s go put this stuff in our room.
PANEL 35:
They put the boxes down in the room, Devon’s side is already set up similarly to his old room beside there’s no clothes on the floor yet.
PANEL 36:
Hani starts to unpack, Devon is standing over them.
DEVON
I’m done unpacking, can I help you unpack?
PANEL 37:
Hani waves their hands and forces a nervous smile, Devon folds his arms and looks done with the excuses already.
HANI
It’s fine! You’ve already helped me enough with the boxes.
DEVON
Dude, I’m not just gonna sit here and watch you unpack.
PANEL 38:
They shake hands, Hani rolls their eyes and Devon smiles.
HANI
Alright fine. But ask me where things go before you put them away.
DEVON
Deal.
PANEL 39:
Devon unpacks a box and asks Hani for confirmation of where to put a t-shirt.
DEVON
Where does this go?
HANI
Top drawer.
PANEL 40:
Then Devon pulls out a progress pride flag from one of the boxes and looks at it.
DEVON
Oh wow.
PANEL 41:
Hani looks over and their pupils get small from fear.
PANEL 42:
Hani looks very panicked and takes the flag from Devon, trying to fold it hastily.
HANI
I’m so sorry about that, I forgot I had that in there. Please forget about that-
PANEL 43:
Devon cuts them off and smiles.
DEVON
It’s okay. I’m pan. I just thought it’s funny that everyone from our middle school friend group turned out queer in some type of way.
PANEL 44:
Hani seems relieved and happy.
HANI
Oh, cool.
MONTAGE:
PANEL 45:
They hang the flag up together over Hani’s bed.
PANEL 46:
After some time passes (color of gutters gradients to a dark color), they are in nightwear and getting into bed.
PANEL 47/48:
Split panel where they both say goodnight.
HANI
(Not in a balloon)
Goodnight, Devon.
DEVON
(Not in a balloon)
Night, Hani.
PANEL 49:
Hani goes to sleep, looking peaceful.
PANEL 50:
Devon is sleeping in a sprawled position with headphones on and a Youtube video still playing on his phone.
PANEL 51:
Hani wakes up in bed the next morning (gutter color has shifted back.) Devon’s bed is empty.
PANEL 52:
They look sleepily into the doorway to the kitchen having just arrived.
PANEL 53:
Devon is cooking breakfast and hasn’t noticed Hani yet.
PANEL 54:
Hani smiles blissfully as they watch.
PANEL 56:
Hani snaps out of it and blushes.
PANEL 57:
Hani sits down at the table, and Devon is serving their plates. They smile and talk with empty word bubbles.
